Humira (adalimumab), currently the best-selling drug in the world, is a widely prescribed tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocker used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn’s disease, psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, and uveitis.
In these diseases, the body’s overproduction of TNF, a naturally occurring protein, may cause inflammation. The active substance in Humira, adalimumab, binds to TNF molecules and blocks them from attaching to healthy cells and attacking them. Humira does not stop the body from making too much TNF, but it is designed to reduce TNF’s damaging effects.
