Nucala (mepolizumab) is used to treat severe eosinophilic asthma, a type of asthma characterized by elevated levels of a type of white blood cell called eosinophils. These cells contribute to inflammation in the airways, which can lead to asthma symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.
The active substance in Nucala, mepolizumab, is a monoclonal antibody designed to attach to receptors called interleukin-5 receptors on the surface of eosinophils. By attaching to interleukin-5 and blocking its activity, Nucala reduces the number of eosinophils in the blood and lungs, reducing inflammation and resulting in a reduction in asthma attacks and improvement of symptoms.
