Qutenza (capsaicin) is used for the treatment of neuropathic pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) a lasting pain in the areas of your skin where you had shingles, and peripheral diabetic neuropathy (PDN), nerve damage that results from diabetes.
Qutenza is a topical patch containing the active ingredient capsaicin, the same substance that makes chili peppers hot. Qutenza works by reducing the levels of a neurotransmitter called substance P, which is involved in the sensation of pain.
Qutenza is used as a second-line treatment for neuropathic pain, after other treatments have failed or been found to be ineffective.
