Rocephin (ceftriaxone) is an antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections of the lungs, bone and joints, urinary tract, skin, genitals, and gallbladder, including severe or life-threatening heart or blood bacterial infections. Rocephin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, meaning it is effective against a wide range of bacteria. It is often used as a first-line treatment for severe or complicated infections, as well as for infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Rocephin is also commonly used for prophylaxis before surgery, especially in patients who may have a higher risk of infection.
Rocephin prevents the formation of peptidoglycan, a key component of the bacterial cell wall and by disrupting their cell membranes, thereby killing the bacteria.
