Vancomycin (vancomycin hydrochloride) is a common antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, particularly infections of the skin, lungs, urinary tract, and other areas of the body.
Vancomycin is often reserved for treating serious infections caused by gram-positive bacteria, particularly those resistant to other antibiotics, such as methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Vancomycin prevents the formation of peptidoglycan, a key component of the bacterial cell wall and by disrupting their cell membranes, thereby killing the bacteria.
