VPRIV (velaglucerase alfa) is used for the long-term treatment of patients with Gaucher disease, a rare inherited disorder in which people do not have enough of the acid beta-glucosidase enzyme, so glucosylceramide builds up in the body, typically in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow. This produces anemia, fatigue, bruising, bleeding, enlarged spleen and liver, and bone pain and breaks.

VPRIV is an enzyme replacement therapy that helps to reduce the buildup of fats in these various organs. This may improve the symptoms of Gaucher disease, such as an enlarged spleen and liver, bone pain, and anemia.
