Xolair (omalizumab) is used as an add-on to existing asthma maintenance therapies when asthma symptoms are not adequately controlled with other medications. Xolair can also be used to treat chronic spontaneous urticaria.

The active substance in Xolair, omalizumab, is a monoclonal antibody, which is designed to attach to immunoglobulin E (IgE), a type of antibody in the blood. By attaching to IgE, omalizumab reduces free IgE in the blood. This means that when the body encounters an allergen, there is less IgE available to trigger an allergic reaction. This helps to reduce the symptoms of allergies, and reducing the amount of IgE shrinks nasal polyps and improves symptoms.
